A WELCOME MESSAGE FROM THE DIRECTOR
My name is Paul McLean and I am the Director of the Hockey for Beginners Program, I am looking forward to welcoming your child to the 2022-23 NBHFB season.
To kick things off, we will be having a welcome night on Wednesday October 19th Between 5 and 7 PM at Pete Palangio Arena, where your child will receive their uniform, learn which session time you will have for the first half of the season, and have a walk-through of a typical practice session. Your child will be welcome to participate in an optional free skate during this time, where you as a parent will be able to join them on ice. Full equipment must be worn by your child and any adult participating on ice must wear a helmet to get on the ice.
To alleviate congestion at the arena on Wednesday, we will stagger arrival times based on last names.
*Schedule of ice times for the year *** PLEASE NOTE THAT YOUR CHILD'S ICE TIME WILL BE A 40 MINUTE SESSION WITHIN THE 2 HOUR BLOCK AND TIMES WILL NOT BE GIVEN OUT UNTIL THE INFORMATION NIGHT***
Consideration for ice time is based on age (youngest are earliest), ability(non-skaters will be the earliest) and finally siblings and requested teammates.
Response to any email inquiries will be sent within 24hrs.
See you on the ice,
Paul McLean | [email protected]
STILL HAVE QUESTIONS?
Check out some of our FAQ's answered by the director.
1. How do I receive the $50 equipment credit at Skaters North Source for Sports?
When you registered your child, the name you used was entered into the Beginners database at the store and when you give your name you will receive a $50* credit towards your purchase at Skaters North Source for Sports, 1321 Fisher St. North Bay.*($50 Credit has no cash value)
2. Is there a dressing room for the kids?
Yes, kids can use the change rooms at Pete Palangio or they can also get dressed in the lobby upstairs. You are NOT required to arrive fully dressed this season, however, as a parent who has been through it with 3 kids, I highly recommend dressing at home whenever possible.
3. Just wondering if, on the Wednesday Information Night, will the kids be on the ice?
The first Wednesday (Information Night) will be an informal session, with coaches on the ice but it will basically be public skating for those who wish to skate. Children are required to be in FULL equipment to go out, parents will be required to wear SKATES and a HELMET anytime they go out on the ice. It is an opportunity to prepare your child for what a session of beginner’s hockey is like.
4. Does the uniform include socks?
Yes, the uniform includes a Tim-Bits jersey and socks.
5. I was wondering if there is still the rule about one parent going to the rink at a time?
That rule is NOT in effect this year.
6. What equipment do I need to go on the ice?
I’ve attached a PDF checklist of recommended equipment. Please feel free to come to Skaters North Source for Sports, 1321 Fisher St with any questions or concerns around equipment and fitting. My staff are ready to help answer all your questions and regardless of where you may have purchased your gear, we want to ensure your child is fit properly and safe on the ice. We do not charge for our advice and want you to feel comfortable asking us anything you may be unsure of. We will also set up an equipment table Wednesday to showcase equipment that we sell in store. (We will NOT be selling at the arena but all product will be available at the store)
7. Do I need to sharpen my child’s skates?
Please note that new skates do NOT come sharpened in the box, and skating on dull or unsharpened skates will make it very difficult for your child to learn. I have included a FREE SKATE SHARPENING coupon for you to use on your child’s skates to help them have the best experience possible. If you"re not sure, get them sharpened to start the year.
8. Can I help out on the ice with my son or daughter?
Yes, you can, and we are looking for parent volunteers to help out the instructors on the ice. If you are interested, the only requirements are that you wear a helmet and skates and can stand up on the ice yourself. Please do not worry if you are not able to help out on the ice, we will have lots of volunteers and instructors to assist your child.
9. What if I can't make it Wednesday’s Information night?
You will be able to stop by Skaters North Source for Sports, 1321 Fisher St to pick up your jersey and socks, beginning Thursday October 20th , in the morning.
10. Can my child play on the same team as a sibling or friend?
Yes. We do our best to accommodate both sibling and friend requests as we understand that this helps parents for carpooling purposes as well as encouraging a child to participate in a new program.
11. Is a mouthguard necessary for my child to participate?
NO. As per Hockey Canada mouthguards are not mandatory but are recommended.
**IF you still have questions, please feel free to email me OR come to speak to me Wednesday Night at the arena.
